Ingredients

For 20 meatballs

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 500 grams ground pork
  • 100 grams breadcrumbs or finely ground bread
  • 1 large onion grated
  • ½ cup fresh parsley finely chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh mint finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp yogurt 100 grams
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 300 grams grated mozzarella for topping

For the tomato sauce

  • 800 grams canned chopped tomatoes
  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • ½ cup white wine

Instructions

  • Place all the meatball ingredients, except for the mozzarella, in a large bowl. Mix and knead well until everything is thoroughly combined.
  • Shape the mixture into approximately 20 small meatballs and arrange them in a lightly greased baking dish.
  • Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F) and bake the meatballs for 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, prepare the tomato sauce by mixing all the sauce ingredients together in a bowl.
  • Remove the baking dish from the oven and pour the tomato sauce over the meatballs. Return to the oven and bake for a further 30–35 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and the meatballs are thoroughly cooked.
  • Sprinkle the grated mozzarella over the top and return the dish to the oven for a few more minutes, until the cheese has melted and turned beautifully golden.
  • Serve hot with pasta or rice and enjoy!
